Kamala Surayya
Kamala Surayya known as Madhavikutty born on March 31, 1934 in Punnayurkulam, a region in Malabar district, Kerala. She wrote numerous short stories and poems in both English and Malayalam. At a time when Indian woman poets were expected to write about the girlish teen relationships of love and fantasies, Kamala brought up a bold and courageous though inspiring the character of woman living in reality. Her writings mainly reflected a woman’s restictions in the Indian society, which was highly misunderstood by most Indian critics. She was greatly criticised for her open-minded and straight forward nature, which reflected in her books.
But all controversies did not break down the poetess nor her love for books. She boldly faced false gossips and lies spread by people about her and became more successfulThe woman who called herself the Radha of Lord Krishna, his devotee and best friend, suprisingly converted herself into Islam in 1999. This led to more controversies. But she lived her life as Kamala Suraiyya till May 31, 2009. On 31 May 2009, aged 75, she died at a hospital in Pune. Her body was flown to her home state of Kerala. Thousands lined the route of the funeral procession from Kochi to Trivandrum, throwing flowers on the hearse. Her funeral, at Palayam Mosque in central Thiruvanathapuram, saw an unprecedented coming together of all faiths on the welcoming grounds of the Mosque to honour Kamala. She was buried in a grove on the Mosque grounds. Two trees were planted either side of the grave by her youngest son.

your writeup on kamala is pithy and concise. in fact it doesnot give any useful insight more than what has already been told many times before. what you missed and all muslims missed was the point that she lived as muslim for ten years and died as one. during that entire period no muslim or muslim organisation accorded her the kind of honour she recieved or thought of projecting her as a mascot of the new muslim era. had they done so, it would have brought dividents in the form of muslim women empowerment, communal harmony and overall heightening of the muslim morale. but unfortunately it was not. imagine what the christians, who usually hunt and catch the hapless would have done had they got a madhavi kutty, malayalams premier international writer, one hailing from the most aristicratic family of kerala. muslims as usual griviously erred and didnot know what to do with such a prize catch- as usual, do you agree?
